What is truly amazing is that us humans have a similar make up to plants – we are also carbon based and we also experience the same environmental stressors and threats. The chemicals developed by plants for protection and environmental adaptation are powerful agents within the human body also. Unlike chemicals manufactured in a lab, essential oils change, they adapt. They morph into whatever chemical cocktail will best support the plants survival. A plant fights hard for survival we benefit from that ever-changing fight when we use essential oils. Essential oils can be considered the quintessential life force of aromatic plants, the “soul” of the plant.

Essential oils are extracts or aromatic compounds from plants. They embody the regenerating properties and immune strengthening properties of plants. These natural oils in the plant protect them from insects, shield the plants from a harsh environment and help them adapt to their surroundings. A drop of essential oil is like a snapshot of the plant’s unique makeup and environment. By using essential oils, you are harnessing the protective and healing powers of a plant – this is like mother nature giving us a helping hand with these “smart plant medicine”.

Essential oils can come from all areas of the plant – seeds, bark, leaves, flowers and the roots. They are also highly concentrated oils – by concentrating the oils of a plant you are literally separating the most powerful healing compounds of a plant into a single oil. To get 1 pound of lavender essential oil it takes 150 pounds of lavender flowers – 150 times the healing properties. Essential oils are 50 – 70 times more powerful than herbs. I love how they benefit me on so many levels – physically, emotionally, mentally and indeed spiritually. They don’t just minimize symptoms they address the root cause and are powerful and safe without nasty negative side effects. They also work out so much more economical than over the counter medication as they are pennies per dose. I have not need to see a doctor in years.

Essential oils due to the small molecular size can penetrate the cell wall and work on threats inside and outside the cell membrane. You also do not become immune to the benefits unlike modern medication. Essential oils are lipophilic and transdermal (fat soluble) which means that can pass through the cell membrane and into the blood stream also. They are extremely fast acting see the info below.

Protection in plants – protection for us

Protection in plants – Plants produce essential oils for two main reasons - protection and communication. The “essential oils fragrant cloud” surrounding the plant may attract a species of bee that will aid in cross pollination when it visits a similar plant in flower. Also, insects that might eat the plant are deterred by the slowly vaporizing essential oil. Certain essential oils are toxic to specific insects and certain essential oils can have the opposite effect and mimic insect pheromones. There are also instances where plants communicate with other plants of the same species through the release of essential oils for example warning re nearby predators. This explains why essential oils are volatile – released as and when needed and able to carry their “message” across space.

It is no surprise to learn that essential oils similarly protect us humans against certain disease-causing microbes (many cases the same ones that can damage plants). Many essential oils are found to be either CNS stimulants or sedatives in humans. Nature is very good at adapting, and rarely invents something new when an existing invention will suffice. Just as essential oil constituents perform multiple functions in plants and insects, so they also do in mammals. Our bodies are biologically programmed to react to essential oil constituents, which interact with a variety of receptor sites, neurochemicals and enzymes, giving them a potential for therapeutic activity.

Essential oil quality – the doTERRA difference.

I have been using essential oils for years – loved making my own homemade soaps and concoctions and homemade gifts. I was so excited to discover doTERRA essential oils as the difference was immediate and amazing. I knew I had discovered something special. I could immediately appreciate the difference.

What makes doTERRA essential oils different is the quality – simple as that. One of the main factor that determine the purity/therapeutic value of an essential oil is the chemical constituents. The chemical constituents can be affected by a vast number of variables. One of the most important variables is the plant material – doTERRA sources the plant material from the country of native origin for the higher healing properties. Lavender from Mexico is different from the lavender grown in France for example. The pH level and nutrients in the soil are different in each location, relative humidity is different and more. Other variables include the part of plant oil that was used, soil conditions, climate, altitude, harvesting methods etc. All these factors greatly impact the essential oil quality.

Each harvest of plant material has its own “fingerprint” and is tested later in the process for purity and therapeutic grade qualities.

HaRvest, traceability & "BEYOND organic"

The harvesting process is critical – different raw material (bark as op- posed to a delicate flower) requires different procedures/process and demands mastery. doTERRA ensures that all their growers are selected, trained and monitored on their harvest practices.

Certified pure therapeutic grade or CPTG is the grading standard used by doTERRA to ensure essential oils are free of any contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues. In addition to being 100% pure and natural, dōTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are subjected to further quality testing that ensures the correct composition of the active natural compounds found in each oil. (further details on the testing here (https://doTERRA.com/US/en/cptg-testing-process). The CPTG testing protocols require the use of independent laboratories for CPTG standardization and quality testing. Each batch undergoes multiple 3rd party testing to certify purity and potency.

I also get traceability using these oils - you can pop in the unique ID on every bottle (base of bottle) and get quality control test results from independent third-party laboratories. doTERRA is fully committed to quality.

All of their testing reassures me I am using 100% natural and pure essential oils that are safe for me, my family and my students to use.

Are doTERRA essential oils organic?

dōTERRA’s CPTG essential oils exceed industry standards. Because organic certification varies from country to country, province to province, and in the US, from state to state, it is not currently possible to acquire all oils under certified organic status. However, through the GC/MS analysis process, we are able to determine if any chemical residue exists in the essential oil, e.g., pesticides, herbicides, extenders, and solvents. With this rigorous analysis process, we are able to ensure that all CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic GradeTM essential oils offered by dōTERRA are absolutely pure as nature intended and a step above organic.

"Many of doTERRA's essential oils are certified organic, others are ECOCERT, and some do not have any certification. The reason for this is because we source from so many developing countries. The certification requirements and availability differs from country to country. Some countries don't even have a certification offering. For example, it costs $2,500 for a grower to receive organic certification in Madagascar. This certification lasts two years. Most of the time, an inspector never even visits the farm to verify that they are, in fact, growing organically. The fee is what matters here. However, most of the growers in this impoverished country cannot afford the certification, although they are all growing by the same standards. Pesticides and herbicides are not used. The reason doTERRA has chosen not to print "certified organic" or "ECOCERT" on our labels is because each lot has different certifications. Some of our Ylang Ylang may come in with organic certification and another lot may not have the certification. These two lots meet the very same quality standards. They go through the same battery of tests and are both certified not to contain pesticides, herbi- cides, fillers, synthetics, or added natural compounds. There is no difference in the quality or purity. One producer simply paid a fee to be certified organic and another did not."

"When we say that our oils are better than organic, it is because we have the ability to see even the smallest component in each lot of oil. If there is anything contained in the essential oil that was not naturally produced by nature in the plant with nothing added, it is rejected. That's what I love about our Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade process.

We work with the best analytical scientists in the world--nothing gets past them!"

" Emily Wright is one of the founders of doTERRA. Here, she explains why doTERRA oils might not say they are organic on the label, however they do say CPTG, which is in fact a much higher standard than organic certification, and here’s why ..."
