my 9 reasons for choosing dōTERRA
My background in science means that I focus on quality. I was looking for a long time for top quality essential oils and very excited when I encountered dōTERRA. The planets aligned, the stars were twinkling, the timing was right.
dōTERRA is committed to providing the best quality essential oils in the world. You can tell the difference immediately. I still remember my first inhalation.
CPTG standard represent the dōTERRA difference.
dōTERRA wanted to have transparent accountability so they created an internal standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG). CPTG essential oils represent the safest and most beneficial oils available in the world today (insert link to CPTG here).
dōTERRA utilizes 8 methods of testing for each CTPG oil. Each of the tests are run three times and the final testing is through an independent, verified third party laboratory before the essential oils are bottled. Also, every liter is tested not random samples – we are getting the good stuff. Further details on all the testing.
dōTERRA Science: Essential Oil GC/MS Testing
GMO - dōTERRA products are free from genetically modified material.
Animal testing? dōTERRA does not initiate or support animal testing on any of our products.
Kosher? Almost all of dōTERRA’s products come from kosher origins. The only product that is not considered kosher is the GX Assist because it is encapsulated in porcine and bovine gelatin. Many of the ingredients are kosher certified, but we do not currently do kosher certification on our products.
2. Co-impact sourcing
What is important for me when I choose to partner with a company is the Corporate Social responsibility agenda. I choose to support companies that are not only socially responsible, but produce sustainable and traceable products with honest and integrity. Co-impact sourcing is an initiative that is very close to my heart.
This sourcing model makes dōTERRA unique among essential oil companies.
When I pick up a bottle of Vetiver to help me feel more grounded or sleep at night I have a deep appreciation and gratitude for the toil, sweat and effort from the local farmers in Haiti that have produced this precious essential oil. Harvesting and producing Vetiver essential oil is very labor intensive and time consuming. When I purchase this oil, I am supporting dōTERRA efforts in ensuring that the famers are paid a fair wage throughout all stages of production as well as supporting the Healing Hands efforts in the country. This has a ripple effect in the local economy in terms of employment, hospitals, schools and represent an important lifeline. This is the same for all the essential oils produced under Co-impact sourcing. We make a difference to the lives of farmers and their families in areas of the world with severe environmental and economic challenges.
3. HEALING HANDS FOUNDATION
In conjunction with Co-impact sourcing dōTERRA has a non-profit charity called the Healing Hands Foundation that is funded by members, employees and the founders. I really admire this genuine “giving back” ethos and supporting those that have been less fortunate.
“The doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation seeks to bring healing and hope to the world, for lives free of disease and poverty, and to ultimately empower impoverished communities with the tools needed to become self-reliant”
For example, Nepal, (where we source Wintergreen and the new essential oil Spikenard) had a natural disaster in 2015 – an earthquake measuring 7.8. dōTERRA provided support straight in the form of emergency relief supplies for the immediate needs as well as building two earthquake proof schools. Similar amazing philanthropic projects in Bulgaria, Guatemala, Kenya and Madagascar. Further information here: -
More recently dōTERRA organized a humanitarian trip to Lesvos to provide relief to refugee camps. Working with an NGO on the ground “Because We Carry” to raise funds to erect a permanent community center for community activities, distribution of supplies and other needs. Further information here: -
Essential oil experts will tell you that the characteristics of an essential oil largely depends on where it’s grown – the environment plays a pivotal role. For this reason, dōTERRA actively seeks out the highest quality plants all over the world that produce higher quality therapeutic oil. When doTERRA sources an essential oil, we look for areas where plants are grown in a sustainable way. Besides supplying oils for years to come, sustainable plants minimize maintenance needs and use of resources this is part and parcel of the principles of Co-impact Sourcing. dōTERRA proactively looks to find the right path or supply chain to minimize the environmental impact and reuse/recycle as much as possible. This story re Cardamon illustrates
Similar situation with the production of Ylang Ylang (sourced in Madagascar)– dead trees foraged from the forest floor are added to compost. Composting is a common practice in our partners’ production operations throughout the world. In the case of Arborvitae (sourced in Canada) essential oil production – the by-product sawdust is dried and sent to paper mills.
dōTERRA respects Mother Nature – with every new essential oil that becomes available it is reassuring to know that dōTERRA will continue to prioritize stewardship over Mother Nature and conscientious responsibility regarding her resources. “dōTERRA” means after all “gift of the earth”.
Another point to note re sustainability – you will have notice that we do not have every essential oil under the sun - if we are unable to source an essential oil sustainably then we will not source it at all. The goal is quality not quantity.
Traceability - each batch of dōTERRA essential oils goes through a battery of rigorous tests to ensure they meet the CPTG standard – you can view the tests results
(from independent third-party laboratories) by popping in the unique ID on the base of every bottle
I really appreciate the transparency displayed by dōTERRA as well as the commitment to quality.
5. Global botanical network
dōTERRA works with farmers and distillers in over 40 countries to provide essential oils to customers around the world. I like that they value the wealth of expertise local growers and producers have when it comes to the plants that provide essential oils that grow on their land. About 2/3 of the countries dōTERRA sources from are third-world countries so dōTERRA has a lot of opportunities to change the world through working with them.
While the temptation may be to buy out large plots of land to create farms dedicated to these plants, the simple fact remains that you cannot replace the knowledge of these local growers and distillers—many of whom have worked their different crops for generations. It would be impossible to try to assimilate all that knowledge and experience, so why not simply recruit that expertise into a global network this is the bedrock of the “global botanical network”.
6. Education &Support
Ongoing education and support for safe and effective use is a big part of your essential oil journey. It is important that you know how to use the oils and products and get the confidence to get creative. As well as the companywide resources dōTERRA provides we also have team specific Facebook groups, continuous education zoom calls, tons of printed resources and reference books from topics ranging from essential oils and the chakras to essential oils for your pet. We’ve got you covered. I have found dōTERRA’s customer support exceptional – you can call or email and will get assistance asap. Ensuring people know how to use the products and are happy is the backbone of dōTERRA business.
We also have the “big guns” in the scientific arena – we are associated with many scientific affiliates. As a billion-dollar company, they can re-invest that money back into the science and education of essential oils. Wellness advocates like myself are given a direct pipeline of information, constantly evolving and growing as a community. For further details :-
7. My passions – yoga and nature
Partnering with doTERRA has enable me to live my passion. I never imagined it would come together the way it has. Yoga has been part of my life for the last 20 odd years and I have always been drawn to natural products, the wisdom of nature and working with the body rhythms and cycles. Much of the science of yoga was gained from watching nature and her creatures. Ancient saints and sages noticed that animals with low respiratory rates, like the tortoise, but also like the elephant lived longer life spans with a controlled, long breath. Many of the yoga poses are called after animals so getting inspiration from nature is not new from downward dog to cobra, dolphin, pigeon, eagle etc.
Using aromatic substances or fragrances from plants to quieten the mind before yoga/meditation is as old as the hills – known as “ghanda” (a Sanskrit word). Cedarwood and sandalwood for example was used in incense as well as special anointing oils with frankincense.
The more I dive into yoga and essential oils the more commonalities I find. The discoveries are still ongoing…
8. Empowered choices - plant based wellness
Essential oils go directly into your cellular membrane so you can experience the effects immediately – they are lipophilic and transdermal. They are by nature, anti-infectious, anti – bacterial, anti-microbial so “super powers” in terms of natural defense. They are designed by nature to protect the plant and aid in communication “volatile messengers”. There are hundreds of natural compounds in the oils, it’s much more difficult for the pathogens to become resistant to the oils, in terms of bacterial infections. Looking after my wellbeing using essential oils is not only effective, economical but also feels great. I do not get colds, flues anything like the “average” person – granted I live a pretty healthy lifestyle and take a proactive “positive daily habits” approach to wellbeing also. I believe in the cumulative effect of a thousand small decisions – from starting the day with meditation, yoga, eating well, exercise and looking after your precious body with natural products as much as possible.
9. An amazing MLM
dōTERRA was founded in 2008, there are no outside investors, the owners personally funded the start-up and own 100% of the company. The founders took a big risk, started small and became a debt-free market leader in essential oils. That takes belief, determination and vision - kudos to them. The MLM space has its share of good and bad companies. dōTERRA is an authentic multi-level marketing company focused on high-quality product that people love and use. We have an unprecedented retention rate - 68 percent retention rate, compared to a direct selling industry average near 10 percent. Why is that? the products work. Simple. 85% of the people with a dōTERRA account are customers. These are the people I love to support in using the oils. There is so many extra benefits also if you decide to become a loyal user – will go into this in a more detailed blog. The choice is yours to make.
