The “doctrine of signatures”, dating from the time of Dioscorides and Galen (translated – as old if not older than the hills!) states that herbs resembling various parts of the body can be used by herbalists to treat ailments of those body parts what this means in layman terms is that a plant resembles the condition or part of the body that it can heal. Walnuts resemble the cranium and are great for brain health- all those omega fats.

I think Grapefruit is a great example of this concept. Grapefruit is one of the citrus essential oils – but it is a bit quirky as unlike all the others it is not photosensitive.
Grapefruit – energetically is the oil of honoring the body. Teaches respect and appreciation and acceptance of one’s body.
Grapefruit helps reduce mental and physical fatigue.
The citrus essential oils come from the RIND not fruit – totally different chemical makeup to the fruit so for example grapefruit essential oil is ok with certain heart medications.
Grapefruit is also renowned for its cleansing and purifying benefits.
It is beneficial for oily skin issues and helps to purify as it cleanses. Grapefruit is frequently used in skin care for its ability to promote clear, healthy skin and in weight loss products to support healthy metabolism.
I always consider it a great essential oil for women due to its impact on the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is part of our detoxification process in the body. This system does not have a “pump” so we have to specifically target it. Yoga is great, body brushing, and massage can work wonders.
Re massage I make a blend with sweet almond oil and use it when I “cup” my body after a shower (will do blog on cupping soon) – this helps my lymphatic system detox and reduces cellulite. The breast a lot of fatty tissues and this holds toxin – a massage oil containing grapefruit is great here also – blended with geranium (a heart chakra essential oil) is wonderful.
See on the images attached the similarity between a cross section of a grapefruit and side profile of a female breast.
